Labor Day Weekend may represent an extra day of rest for many Americans, but for the ProRodeo barrel racers, it means a slew of rodeos to win at and work to clinch their NFR qualifications at locations like Ellensburg Rodeo in Washington in 2023.
Ellensburg’s Monday morning short round was a tight battle between many of the top 15 and bubble cowgirls, and fans were able to watch the world standings drama, as well as the battle for the bubble position play out in real time.
Jordon Briggs and Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi played leapfrog during the three rounds of competition, a repeat of their performances in Kennewick above Famous Lil Jet for Briggs, and SR Industry Titan for Tonozzi. At Ellensburg, Briggs captured the first round ahead of Tonozzi, Tonozzi snagged the second round win in front of Briggs and Briggs finished second behind Tonozzi’s new arena record of 16.90 seconds in the short round, giving Tonozzi the leg up in the aggregate. Prior to the weekend, Tonozzi had $216,267.50 won on the season across 70 rodeos, while Briggs has held down the No. 2 position all summer long, amassing $150,763.42 in 27 rodeos.
Meanwhile, the third and fourth-place finishers provided equal parts drama from just outside the top 15. NFR veterans, Sissy Winn and Stevi Hillman previously sat No. 16 and 17 in the world, respectively with $83,334.88 and $82,751.01. Winn and Hillman both showed out in the finals at Ellensburg.
Winn’s mount of choice was AR Dash Ta Flame, “Scoop.” Winn picked up a check in the second round, then showed out in the finals to finish third in 17.18 seconds behind Briggs, earning third overall in the aggregate and earning $4,819 on the week. Winn also split the win at the IPE and Stampede in Armstrong, British Columbia, to pick up another $3,656 and earn $8,475 to help her out on the bubble in a big way.
Hillman was aboard Cuatro Fame “Truck,” in Elensburg and was rock solid through all three rounds, placing in every go-round and clinching fourth in the aggregate, worth $4,581 combined. She also placed deep in Armstrong, bringing her overall earnings to $7,599.
The remainder of the aggregate placings were full of cowgirls on the bubble defending their positions: Ilyssa Riley, Emily Beisel and Paige Jones all drew solid payouts at Ellensburg.
In other notable winning news, Wenda Johnson picked up a solid win (split with Marcie Wilson) at a Playoff Series rodeo at the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, Idaho, for $2,851, and the Playoff Series event win in Walla Walla, Washington, went to Megan McLeod-Sprague, followed closely by bubble ladies Summer Kosel and Leslie Smalygo.
