The $500,000 guaranteed Young Guns League race is set for its second year in Guthrie. Oklahoma’s Lazy E Arena, and the first two days brought exciting Derby barrel racing performances, and we’ve got the rundown on the results here.
Derby
Round 1
The first round of the Young Guns League derby saw Jesse Harris and DLF Cash Two Annie, a 2019 mare by Repete Offender out of TT Two Cash by Letters Judgement. Harris, the owner and rider, earned $8,250 for herself, plus $1,031 each for the stallion and breeders Dan & Laura Farley. Her time was a 16.852.
Behind her, repeat NFR qualifier Carlee Otero rode Cathys Kandy, a daughter of The Kandyman out of Frenchmans Perkette by Frenchmans Guy to the $5,610 owner payout with a 17.005-second run. She also earned $1,031 for The Kandyman and $1,031 to breeder Cathy Geary.
In the 2D, Suade Furr and TKW Lady Pearl, a 2019 mare by Feel The Sting out of TKW First Down Dolly by First Down Dash ran a 17.637 and cashed in for $4,250 for owner Emma Martinez, $531 for breeders Trey & Kimmie Wall and $531 to Feel The Sting.

Round 2
Round two saw Carlee Otero and Cathys Kandy move to the lead early on in the race with a 16.815-second run. The NFR qualifier just finished her time on the ProRodeo trail, where the young mare excelled in a variety of setups. Her time earned the $8,250 win for herself, plus $1,031 each to breeder Cathy Geary and The Kandyman.
Behind her, 2020 NFR qualifier Jimmie Smith and Roarrrin Ta Fame earned the reserve win with a 16.893-second run.
The 2D victory went to Carley Turak and Sounds Like Fiesta in 17.583 seconds. She owns and rides the 2018 mare by HP Dash Ta Fiesta.

Aggregate
After finishing third in Round 2, Jesse Harris and DLF Cash Two Annie locked up the aggregate win on two runs with a combined time of 33.782, worth $16,500 for herself as the owner, $2,063 for Repete Offender and $2,063 to the breeders.
With all three rounds combined, Harris and “Annie,” added $36,300 to the mare’s LTE.
Otero and Cathys Kandy earned $11,210 for herself as the owner, and $1,403 each to breeder and stallion for their reserve aggregate win. Combined with her round placing and win, Cathys Kandy added $33,990 to her LTE.
In the 2D, Kansas cowgirl Chelsea Moore went 35.328 on two runs abaord her gelding JD Jackson Kandyman, earning $8,500 for her cut. Sire The Kandyman earned $1,063 for the win, and breeder Teresa Melvin earned $1,063 as the breeder. JD Jackson Kandyman is a 2019 gelding out of Frenchamns Azalea by Frenchmans Guy.

Futurity
Round 1

The first round of the Young Guns League Futurity went to Heidi Gunderson aboard Wonder If I’m Lucky, a 2021 bay gelding by Lucky Wonder Horse out of T5 Sunnys Superstar by PC Mr Sun Peppy. The Purcell, Oklahoma, horse is owned by Shannon Kulseth and bred by Stephanie Cleveland of Bristow, Oklahoma. Gunderson’s winning time of 16.902 seconds earned $8,507 for the owner, plus $1,063 each to the stallion and breeder.
Taking second in the 1D was Kit Johnson with Wolverrine, a 2020 buckskin stallion by The Goodbye Lane out of Rosas Cantina CC by Corona Cartel. Owned by Mill Iron Livestock / Tyson & Del Bieleny of Czar, Alberta, and bred by Alan Woodbury of Dickinson, North Dakota, the pair stopped the clock at 17.084, earning $5,788 for the owner and $724 each to the stallion and breeder.
In the 2D, Hallie Hanssen and WR Famous Delight, a 2020 bay mare by The Kandyman out of RR Phoenix Spark by Frenchmans Phoenix, turned in a 17.653-second run to top the division. The mare, owned by Lee & Hallie Hanssen of Hermosa, South Dakota, and bred by White Ranch LLC of Oelrichs, South Dakota, earned $4,250 for the owner, along with $531 each to the stallion and breeder.

Round 2
Ashley Schafer and HP Hotrod laid down the fastest run of the round to top the 1D with a 17.015-second trip. The 2021 sorrel stallion is by Dash Ta Fame and out of Rods Last Ladybug by Sharp Rodney. Owned by Highpoint Performance Horses of Pilot Point, Texas, and bred by Charlie and Jason Cole Martin, Schafer’s run earned $8,250 for the owner, plus $1,031 each to the stallion and breeder.

Right behind her, Sigrid Scheid and SS Kellie Dancer, a 2020 buckskin mare by RR Mistakelly out of Dancin Withmy Cowboy by Cowboys Cartel, stopped the clock at 17.020 seconds to finish second in the 1D. Scheid, who owns and bred the mare in Hazen, North Dakota, collected $5,610, along with $701 each to the stallion and breeder.
In the 2D, Caroline Boucher rode RR Hot Rock to the win for owner Robin Weaver of Pennsylvania. The 2020 brown mare by RR Mistakelly out of XV Watch Me Rock by Famous Bugs earned a 17.520-second run, worth $4,250 to the owner, plus $531 each to the stallion and breeder.

Average
Consistency paid off in Guthrie, where Heidi Gunderson and Wonder If I’m Lucky claimed the Young Guns League Futurity Average Championship with a combined time of 33.928 seconds. The 2021 bay gelding by Lucky Wonder Horse out of T5 Sunnys Superstar by PC Mr Sun Peppy is owned by Shannon Kulseth of Purcell, Oklahoma, and bred by Stephanie Cleveland of Bristow, Oklahoma. Gunderson’s steady performances earned $16,698 for the owner, plus $2,087 each to the stallion and breeder.

Second in the average went to Shawn and Casey Varpness’s The Kandyman Kid, a 2021 buckskin stallion by The Kandyman out of Shezastreaknsunfrost by A Streak Of Fling. Ridden by Shawn Varpness of Rochester, Minnesota, the duo finished with a 34.159, earning $11,352 for the owners and $1,419 each to the stallion and breeder Gary Bartelt of Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

Third in the average was Sigrid Scheid and her homebred mare SS Kellie Dancer, a 2020 buckskin by RR Mistakellyout of Dancin Withmy Cowboy by Cowboys Cartel. The pair clocked 34.238 seconds, collecting $8,712 to the owner and $1,089 each to the stallion and breeder.
The 2D Average Championship went to Rylee Elliott Howell, who rode My Guy Wearz Pantees for owner Jennifer McGraw of Ocala, Florida. The 2020 bay gelding by The Kandyman and out of Stoli My Guy by Traffic Guy was bred by Lisa and Jeremy Nicolas of Rockdale, Texas. Howell’s consistent runs totaled 35.448 seconds, good for $8,500 to the owner and $1,063 each to the stallion and breeder.
