In this episode of The Money Barrel, McKenna Coronado opens up about the highs, lows, and full-circle moments of her career — from growing up in a cutting horse family to finding her stride in ProRodeo aboard three very different horses.
Coronado’s 2025 season has been defined by adaptability and grit. When her homebred mare “Trashy” went down with a stifle joint infection in March, her circle rallied to keep her going — including Kelli Thouvenell, who sent her KT Shine Down (“Shine”), a gelding out of her great mare Cleo. The switch led to one of Coronado’s biggest moments yet: a record-setting 16.7-second run at Reno, made all the more meaningful by the royal blue shirt she wore in honor of her late father.
Listeners also hear about Biddon On Fame (“Beau”), whose gritty style carried her to a Cowboy Christmas win at Red Lodge, and how she balances each horse’s strengths to match the setups and ground they handle best. Throughout the conversation, Coronado shares the lessons she’s learned from horses she once doubted, the value of trusting her circle, and the blessings that often come disguised as setbacks.
Now sitting sixth in the WPRA world standings with more than $78,000 won, Coronado is making the most of her first full season outside the Wilderness Circuit — and she’s not slowing down anytime soon.
