Andrea Busby maintained dominance from start to finish at the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Born On Derby Day to bank $27,700 throughout the ProRodeo tournament and overtake the No. 1 position in the 2025 WPRA World Standings.

At the FWSSR tournament, Busby and Born On Derby Day won both sections of their bracket and their Semifinals before facing off with the cutthroat field of barrel racers inside Dickies Arena. Coming down the alleyway with the No. 1 position on the drag, Busby had figured out the key to perfect angles in Fort Worth.

“Derby is a very sensitive horse,” Busby said. “There’s a fine line between not getting into it with her, but also not holding her too much and confusing her. I’d watched my videos back and figured right where the (brown alleyway panels) turn into (white arena panels) was a good starting point. I think this is a great pen to run a left-handed horse.”

With her successful 16.16-second run to kick things off, Busby had to sweat out the times behind her. And it was a horse race until the last runner, with Kassie Mowry and Jarvis going 16.27, Toria Madsen with a 16.31 and Megan McLeod Sprague and Jag last out going 16.21. Born On Derby Day is a 2017 mare by Freckles Ta Fame out of decorated mare KR Last Fling. Bred by Spitz Quarter Horses and raised by Seth and Ashley Schafer, Derby had a successful futurity career with trainer Schafer before the Busby’s purchased her. In total, the 8-year-old racked up $351,290 in QData official earnings prior to her Fort Worth win. See Derby’s full QData report here.

For Busby, swapping between NFR aggregate champion, Jets Top Gun, or “Benny,” to Derby took work, as has seasoning the mare over the past few years.

“Benny is a bigger, longer-strided horse with a rounder style, while Derby is smaller, shorter-strided, and turns best when she stays a little straighter,” Busby said. “That helps her keep reaching through the turn. It’s taken me some time to really get with her, figure out her style, and understand what works for her at the rodeos. She had a phenomenal futurity career with Ashley Schafer, and I can’t say enough great things about the few I’ve had the opportunity to ride behind Ashley on and how she prepares those horses.”

When the World Standings updated on Monday following the Fort Worth Finals, Busby’s name was comfortably at the top with $34,086.95 earned on the 2025 season.

The Brock, Texas, cowgirl isn’t slowing down after Fort Worth. She and Derby went straight down to San Antonio to win a Round, place reserve in another and advance smoothly out of her Bracket to the Semifinals with $4,727 banked. Keep up with San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo results here.
