The first day of the $1,155,000 Ruby Buckle East barrel race in Perry, Georgia, saw Sydney Graham aboard Dupont First top Round 1 of the Derby, while teenager Rhaylen Maloy won Round 1 of the futurity on Madam Made Me Epic.

Round 1

Texas cowgirl Sydney Graham jockeyed the 2019 stallion, Dupont First to a commanding victory amongst 188 runners with a 14.710-second run. Dupont First, known as “Trump,” is by Duponte and out of First Fervor by First Down Dash. The win was worth $5,100 for owner Run Away Ranch, plus $638 for breeder Bobby Cox and Duponte, each.

Behind Graham, Southeastern phenom Blaise Bercegeay Wheeler earned second on The Goodbye Guy. No stranger to success in Perry, the Mississippi native jockeyed the 2020 buckskin gelding by The Goodbye Lane out of Frenchmans Drama by Frenchmans Guy in 14.864 seconds. She earned $3,400 for owner Scott Duke and $425 for breeder Catherine Asmussen and the stallion each.

In the 2D, Marlena Williams rode Smoothdash Ta Heaven (JL Dash Ta Heaven x Jets Smooth Lady x Pepto Honor Jet to the $2,400 win thanks to a smooth 15.464.

Round 2

Friday’s Round 2 featured a standout 14.662-second run by Natalie Stephens and Firewaters Fortune. After a downed barrel in Round 1, Stephens rode the 2018 gelding by Tres Fortunes out of Happy To Run Em by Firewaterontherocks to the fastest time of the week up until that point in competition to earn $5,100 for owner Twin Hills Ranch, $638 to stallion and $638 to breeders Jo & Latricia Duke.

Behind her, Sydney Graham and Dupont first ran a 14.802 to earn second in the round.

Gage Hudson earned a 2D Ruby Buckle title for himself and owner Angela Hudson in 15.413 on Tiny Dash Of Vanilla, a 2019 gelding by Fame Ta Corona and out of Tiny Dashing Rap by Tiny Guy. It paid $2,400 to Hudson, $300 to stallion and $300 to breeders Travis Ray and Kristin Brown.

Aggregate

Graham and Dupont First locked up the $10,200 owner win with a 29.512 on two runs in the average. It was a Round 1 repeat in the reserve position with Blaise Wheeler and The Goodbye Guy turning in a 28.835, after placing No. 6 in Round 2 to win the reserve title and a total of $8,500 aggregate total to the horse’s lifetime earnings.

New York’s Jen Merriman earned the 2D victory on two runs on the 2017 gelding she owned and raised, MPH MagnoliaByDesign for $6,000 total. The 2017 gelding is by Slick By Design out of Magnolia Jets Kiss by Magnolia Bar Jet.

Futurity

Round 1

The 15-year-old rising star Rhaylen Maloy beat out top professionals in Round 1 on Madam Made Me Epic. She rode the 2020 Epic Leader gelding out of Madams Bit Of Fame by Zippy Zevi Dasher to earn $8,000 for owner Ciara Manning, $1,000 for Epic Leader and $1,000 for breeders Kaylon & Seth Rodriguez. Her time was 14.943 on “Marty,” the first horse she’s had the chance to both train and compete on within futurity competition.

On her heels, Ashley Schafer went No. 2 and 3 on HP Hotrod and The Coffee Guy, clocking times of 14.981 and 15.028, respectively. HP Hotrod, a 2020 Ruby Buckle program stallion by Dash Ta Fame out of Rods Last Ladybug earned $5,600 for the owners at Highpoint Barrel Horses, plus and additional $700 for them as breedrs, and $700 to stallion.

The Coffee Guy’s third-place finish earned $4,400 for owners Ashley and Seth Schafer, plus $550 for breeder Robin A Kuhnhei and stallion The Goodbye Lane. The Coffee Guy is a 2020 gelding by TGL and out of Guys Tots N Fries by Frenchmans Guy.

In the 2D, The Goodbye Lane continued to cash in by way of Dustin Angelle and Goatt, a 2021 gelding out of Chicks Quick Molly by Ol Yellow Nugget. Angelle’s 15.703 earned $4,800 for Southwestern Farms and $600 for breeder Suzanne Hill, and TGL each.

Oklahoma’s Ceri Ward rode the 2021 mare, GamblingSlick, by Slick By Design out of MB Soon Tobe Famous by Dash Ta Fame to the second round win in 14.693 seconds. It was worth $8,000 for Ward as the owner and $1,000 each to stallion and to breeders Brandon Stokes & Mike Austin.

Taylor Langdon and Hes Got The Sting turned in a reserve finish in the round.

Aggregate

Dacota Monk and Seis Martinis, a 2020 mare by Tres Seis and out of the great mare, Morning Traffic by Frenchmans Guy repeated their Ruby Buckle West performance in Perry after going 29.946 on two runs, placing fourth and fifth in the rounds, respectively, to win their second Ruby Buckle title of the year and $16,000 for owner Belle Terre Ranch, plus $2,000 to Tres Seis and breeder Michelle Darling, each.

Behind them, Jordan Harrell and DP Blazin Jess quietly won their way to the reserve title and earned $11,200 for owner Dorminy Plantation, $1,400 to the stallion Blazin Jetolena and $1,400 to breeder Brandon Stokes & Mike Austin for the 2021 mare out of Jess Gonna Be Famous by Dash Ta Fame.

Locking up the $12,000 total 2D aggregate win was Alex Stephens, the owner and rider of SBL Bedouins Lady with a 31.476 on two runs. SBL Bedouins lady is a 2020 mare by Shawne Bug Leo and out of Three Eights Bedouin by Royal Quick Dash.

Youth

Rhaylen Maloy had a breakout week across the board, and especially shone through in the Youth. She topped Round 1 on her futurity rollover with Madam Made Me Epic, then came back to win Round 2 on Wee Feelin French. The 2018 BHR Frenchies Socks out of Wee Feelin Special by Special Feelins clocked a 15.039 to earn $900 for Maloy as the owner, and $113 to stallion and breeders Stevi & Jessie Elliott. She also earned the aggregate title on two runs to add another $2,250 to the horse’s LTE.

Rookie Ruby

The boys ruled in the Rookie Ruby classes. Cole Smith and Epic Honor, a 2020 gelding by Epic Honor out of Honor The Bully by Bully Bullion earned $980 for owner Lynne Smith, $123 stallion and $123 to breeder M3 Performance Horses, LLC for the 15.182.
