Governor’s Cup barrel racing Round 1 play-by-play

Here’s our notes on each run in case you missed it live so you can relive every moment of action at Sioux Falls.

Jordon Briggs and Rollo smoked their first barrel but dragged over the second barrel coming out of it, knocking it down to start things off.

Dona Kay Rule’s Valor was slick with his head, turning around each barrel quick and stopping the clock with a 14.27 in a level, businessman run.

Andrea Busby and Tito went to the left first where they had a tight turn. Their solid second and third barrels clocked in at 14.30 for a smooth trip.

LaTricia Duke and Vanilla Wafer came in hot yet still had a tight first. Duke held him off the second and used her expert athleticism to guide Vanilla Wafer around each turn, leg lifting as needed to stay clean. They ultimately finished second in the round with a 14.03.

Steal Money, “Mo,” safetied up and got a step by his first, but Wenda Johnson kept quiet hands on the second barrel, and they were one hole out of the money with a 14.18.

Kassie Mowry and Force The Goodbye unfortunately knocked the first and second barrels, then loped out a low 14-second time to close out the first drag.

Returning champions of the 2023 Governor’s Cup, Emily Beisel and Liza took their typical, careful first barrel approach but slipped and hit the first barrel to ease out a 13-second time.

DM Sissy Hayday started off with her iconic head shake in the alleyway and skated on top of the dirt, finished the run tight coming out the third to top the field with 13.92 beneath Hailey Kinsel.

Shelley Morgan and Kiss came with a swift turn on the backend of the second barrel to lay down a solid run to pick up last hole in the round with a 14.15. Her fourth-place finish will help her out massively in the World Standings race, where she sits No. 15 by just $500 going into the week.

Chelsea Moore and Jackson had a tight first barrel, nailing their approach. They rocked the second and worked hard to get out of it and around the third. They posted a 14.48-second run.

Halyn Lide and Keeper took some quick steps around the first. Keeper took care of himself and managed to wobble, not knock the second barrel and make a 14.08-second run look easy.

Ashley Castleberry and Skyy Blue went by the first a little, but they came back with a solid second barrel to round out the run with a 14.19.

Governor’s Cup Round 2 play-by-play

Ashley Castleberry and Skyy Blue had a solid clean run on the top of the ground to be a 13.70, placing second.

Halyn Lide and Keeper rimmed all three turns. Keeper’s quick feet helped her clock a slick 13.92 in effortless fashion

Chelsea Moore and her 5-year-old Jackson needed to be clean and solid to advance, and that’s exactly what they did. A step by the third helped them get around it and their 14.25 was good enough to hold onto the aggregate advancement.

Shelley Morgan and Kiss need every dollar on the books they can if they want to hold onto No. 15 in the World, and Kiss was silky smooth on every turn. As Kiss sometimes will, she took a step off the third and kept her momentum rolling out to be 14.01 and lock in their Semifinals position.

Sister came into the pen rolling and forced Hailey Kinsel into pulling off an impressive leg lift around the first. She was tight, but Kinsel rode smart and stayed clean to go 13.91.

A stumble at the first turn caused Liza to lose momentum, but she recovered and inhaled her second, causing Emily Beisel to pull off a signature leg lift on the backside, then got past her third. However, Liza’s explosive speed made up for it on the run home, stopping the clock in a 13.96.

After a fresh drag on the ground, Kassie Mowry came back with a picture perfect run to clock the fastest time in two years of Governor’s Cup competition. Mowry rode with two hands around her first turn and jockeyed in expert fashion to leave barely inches between her and each barrel. She clocked an impressive 13.38 to win the round in grand fashion.

Steal Money overshot his first turn slightly, but smoked a second barrel. He setup on Wenda Johnson at three, however, and hit it with his shoulder entering the turn to take Johnson out of aggregate and round competition.

LaTricia Duke may have flown to California this morning for a rodeo slack, but Vanilla Wafer was feeling fresh. Duke was in the leg lift club tonight at her first barrel and rode smart once again to turn in a 14.08 and keep her NFR dreams alive with a guaranteed Semifinals check.

Andrea Busby was also traveling during the daytime, but Tito was ready to party. They stepped off the second turn but held onto an aggregate position, which is vital for Busby, who’s looking to defend her position and head to her first NFR alongside Duke.

Dona Kay Rule and Valor may both be the oldest athletes in the field, but they certainly didn’t look it in Sioux Falls. He was ready to run and snappy on every turn, clocking an impressive 13.87.

Closing out the pack was Jordon Briggs, whose potential 2024 NFR comeback story is in major jeopardy after a downed barrel in Round 1. She gritted out every step, rocking her second barrel but keeping it up tonight. The clock stopped at 13.80, good enough for a deep check, but one out of advancing in the aggregate.
