Ratey vs. Free-Running Barrel Horses with Shali Lord

Shali Lord demonstrating barrel racing

NFR-Qualifier Shali Lord discusses how riders may have to adapt their riding to suit different styles of barrel horses. She talks through the needs of horses that run more “ratey,” versus more “free-rolling,” or “free-running,” styled horses.

“On a ratey horse, you want to get your horse all the way up in the barrel and create good body positiioning for yourself and your horse. On a free-rolling horse, you’re going to have to ask them a little bit early and be a little more consistent in your riding.”
